Dear Desert Ridge and Parents and Staff -

As a parent and or staff member at Desert Ridge Middle School you are automatically a member of the Student, Parent, Staff Organization (SPSO) and we would love for you to be involved.   Meetings are the second Thursday of each month at 8:20 in the library.  In case you did not know, the SPSO does not get funds from the DRMS Direct Donation and needs your assistance with a Member Contribution of a minimum of $10 for DRMS staff members.

This month we are doing a drawing for an airline ticket!  Please get your donation and name in for the drawing.  We have already given one ticket away and ready to do another one!

Return to reception desk by February 28th to be entered into the drawing.

The SPSO provides many opportunities such as the 8th grade dance, Web Leaders, Student Store, monthly Staff hospitality, the school newsletter, helping the counselors with emergency student needs, teacher supplies, as well as coordinating DRMS volunteers.  In recent years, we made larger purchases such as the mobile sound system and two large screens for the gym, blinds for the library and this fall we purchased outside lunch area table umbrellas.

If you have already made your SPSO membership donation we thank you!  We truly appreciate your contribution to making our school all it can be.  Donations can be returned to the school office.

Sincerely,

Desert Ridge Middle School SPSO Board

We are a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, so your donation is tax deductible

Dear Parents,

Cold and Flu season has arrived.  The Health Office has had reports of Influenza, strep throat and gastrointestinal illnesses. If your student has been diagnosed with a contagious disease, please notify the Health Office at 857-9282 Ext. 33813.  The School Nurse uses this information to track and trend disease especially with immunocompromised and medically challenged students in school.

If your child becomes ill and doesn’t feel well enough to take part in school, as parents or guardians, you should keep your child home until the symptoms improve.  This helps prevent the spread of the illness to others at school.  These are some of the examples of when your child should be kept home:

  • Fever* with headache, body aches, earache, sore throat
  • Active vomiting
  • Active diarrhea – three or more times in six hours
  • An airway infection – Cold, Persistent Cough, Runny Nose
  • If antibiotic treatment is needed, your child should remain home for the first full 24 hours of medication (e.g., if your child has three doses per day ordered, then three doses must be given before the child returns to school.
  • Any of the above symptoms with fever or chills

If any symptoms change, worsen or don’t get better please call your health care provider.

*Your child can return to school when he or she is well enough to take part in school and has had no fever for 24 hours without medication (acetaminophen, Tylenol®, etc.).

All students who become ill/injured at school must report first to the Health Office before leaving school. Students will be allowed to contact parents from the Health Office.

If you have any questions please contact the Desert Ridge Health Office or refer to the APS Sick Day Guidelines.

Thank you for helping keep our community healthy!

IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION

All current 6th grade students need to have a Tdap injection prior to starting 7th grade.  Please check your child's shot record for documentation that this injection was done and provide us with a current copy.

If your child still needs to be vaccinated and you wish to avoid an extra line during registration in August, please have the injection done and the record turned in to the health office no later than 4/30/18.  This will allow time to update the charts before closing for the summer break.

If you choose to have the injection during the summer break you will need to bring documentation with you on the registration day in August.  Please do not drop off any records during the summer break.

If you have any questions please call Cyndi Brault, Health Assistant at 857-9282 Ext. #33813.

Good afternoon everyone! Your busy parent elves have been getting sign-up genius's ready for our annual Holiday-in-a-Box event.

For those of you who are new to DRMS, our Social Studies classes participate in the Holiday-in-a-Box event.  There are 22 DRMS families we are helping this year!

In hopes to avoid duplicate gifts and meeting all the needs of our "adopted" families, we have put together a sign-up sheet for each family.  Simply find your child’s Social Studies teacher from the list below, click the link, and then check the box of the item(s) you would like to donate.  Once someone signs up for the item, it is no longer available.  Also, your name will not appear on the donation list.

Please wrap all the personal items and LABEL WHO EACH PACKAGE IS FOR (eg: girl, age 13, family #12, etc.). If possible, include a gift receipt for clothing items that are purchased.  Please bring your items to the school no later than Tuesday, December 12th. SPSO will pick-up the gifts during your lunches on Wednesday, December 13th so we do not interrupt class time.  This will also allow extra time for students who need to drop off the morning of the 13th.

If you have any questions, please contact Margaret Matteucci in the counseling office.  Thank you and your student for participating in this wonderful school event.

Albuquerque Teacher Named Finalist for the 2017 National History Teacher of the Year Award

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (September 6, 2017): Randy Martin, the 2017 New Mexico History Teacher of the Year, has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2017 National History Teacher of the Year Award. The award is presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education.

"Knowledgeable and impassioned teachers bring our country's history to life for students, allowing them to understand engaging with history is about more than a series of facts,” said James G. Basker, President of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. “Teachers are the lifeblood of our students’ education, and these are the best of the best.”

Inaugurated in 2004, the History Teacher of the Year Award highlights the crucial importance of history education by honoring exceptional American history teachers from elementary school through high school. The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools and US Territories. This is the first time the committee has selected a group of finalists from the state honorees. The National History Teacher of the Year will be selected from the pool of 10 finalists in October 2017.

Martin, a teacher at Desert Ridge Middle School in Albuquerque, creates an environment where his students interact hands-on with history. “In a world of ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts,'” said Martin, “enabling students to be able to understand how to distinguish reality from false information using primary sources has become the most critical skill that should be taught in the social studies classroom.”

The winner of the National History Teacher of the Year award receives a $10,000 prize, presented by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Eric Foner at a ceremony in New York City on November 8, 2017. Past presenters at the ceremony include the Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Good Morning America's Robin Roberts, First Lady Laura Bush, former US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Nominations for the 2018 History Teacher of the Year awards are now open. Students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors may nominate K-12 teachers for the award by visiting gilderlehrman.org/nhtoy. The deadline for 2018 nominations is March 30, 2018.

About the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

Founded in 1994 by philanthropists Richard Gilder and Lewis E. Lehrman, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is the leading American history nonprofit organization dedicated to K-12 education. With a focus on primary sources, the Gilder Lehrman Institute illuminates the stories, people and moments that inspire students of all ages and backgrounds to learn and understand more about history. Through a diverse portfolio of education programs, including the acclaimed Hamilton Education Program, the Gilder Lehrman Institute provides opportunities for nearly two million students, 30,000 teachers and 13,000 schools worldwide. Current DRMS 6th and 7th graders,

We recently found out that DRMS students and families were just given a fantastic opportunity to travel to Costa Rica to study science, geography, and culture for Spring Break of 2018 through Education First (EF) Tours! The trip will be an all-inclusive 9 day tour throughout the country. As aforementioned, all costs, including airfare, accommodations, all meals, ground transportation, entry tickets, our own personal tour-guide, and other related costs are covered in the price of the trip.

We will be holding a quick informational meeting about the trip, including costs, how to sign up, etc. on Wednesday, May 10, at 7pm in the school library. This meeting will be for students AND parents to attend. I know it is short notice, but we wanted to let you all know about this opportunity as soon as possible.

For more information on the trip and our probable itinerary, please click on the link below:

Dear Parents of Incoming 9th Graders at La Cueva High School,

We want to welcome you to La Cueva High School for the 2017-18 school year.  We had the pleasure of presenting to all 8th graders on Tuesday, February 21st at DRMS. The kids were excited about the opportunities available next year.  We have attached a copy of the PowerPoint that we presented to the students. It contains important information about high school and also gives you a heads up on some of our upcoming events. Please mark your calendars for the following events...

Feb 27th - 8th Grade Open House

La Cueva will be holding our 8th Grade Open House on Monday, February 27th at 6:00pm.  The activities will start in the Main Gym promptly at 6:00pm. After the main presentation we will have tables set up in the Concourse that will allow you to explore electives and extra-curricular activities.  This is a great way to help your student begin the transition to high school and allows them to see themselves in our environment.

Feb 28th - Coffee with the LCHS Counselors

We realize that the transition, including pre-registration, is not only difficult for students but can be equally difficult for parents.  There are many questions that come up and we want to make ourselves available to answer your questions or concerns.  Some of our Counselors will be at Desert Ridge on Tuesday, February 28th from 8:15 – 9:30am in the Library.

March 1st - Registration Cards and Next Step Plans due

Please sign your student's Green Registration Card, their Next Step Plan, and, if applicable, your students waiver to take an honor's class at LCHS. These documents need to be returned to your student's science teacher.

April 17th - Athletic Open House

If your student in interested in playing sports at La Cueva, we want to also strongly encourage you and your student to attend our Athletic Open House on April 17, 2017 at 6:00pm.  Coaches will be available to talk to students about tryouts, expectations and when practices will start for each sport offered.

All current 6th grade students need to have a Tdap injection prior to starting 7th grade.  Please check your child's shot records for documentation that this injection has been done and provide us with a current copy.

If your child has not been vaccinated and you wish to avoid an extra line at registration in August, please have the injection done and the record turned in to the health office by 4/28/17.
