Registration for the 2019 DC Trip is Now Open!

Dear parents of current 7th graders,

I have already had many questions about how to sign up for our 2019 Washington DC trip, especially since our 2018 trip sold out so quickly, and we had to turn so many people away. In case you missed our meeting last Thursday, I waned to provide some additional info and let you know that 2019 spots are already filling up!

Our 2019 trip is set for May 27 - May 31 (5 days/4 nights). We travel using WorldStrides, an outstanding student tour organization that we have worked with for 10 years. On the trip, we visit all the “must see” sights of DC, plus many more in central and southern Virginia. Because the Social Studies content in 8th grade is focused on early US history, the trip is uniquely and perfectly timed to be the ultimate 8th grade field trip for any student (or parent) who is interested in US history, politics, or government.

The trip is all inclusive (airfare, hotel, meals, ground transportation, entrance fees, etc.), and there is a $150 discount for all travelers (student and parent) who register before the beginning of June. Additionally, the standard deposit to hold your spot is $99, but if you register before June 1, the deposit is $49.

For more info on the trip, including prices, safety, reviews, etc. please visit https://worldstrides.com/itineraries/washington-d-c-williamsburg-va/

worldstrides.com
Visit Washington, D.C., and Williamsburg with your students. Meet your local guide in Washington, D.C., and see history come to life. See a sample itinerary

If you are ready to register, you will need our 2019 trip # 163106

In the meantime, we are also working on offering a couple of other exciting student tours in 2019! This year, we did a science trip to Costa Rica, and next year, we will either go to Costa Rica again or head to Iceland, depending on student interest. We are also looking into a summer student tour to London and Paris. If you are interested in more information about either of these, or if you have any questions about the DC trip, please contact Mr. Randy Martin at martin_r@aps.edu.

Attention Parents and Guardians!

FOR CURRENT APS STUDENTS ONLY

NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION WILL BE APRIL 26TH

from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon in the Library.

You’ve already pre-registered and selected classes for the 2018-19 school year. Now it’s time to update your family’s information with the new Online Registration tool.

I’m sure you remember the pre-printed cards that you had to scribble out and edit by hand every fall in our gymnasium (it’s hard to forget). With the new Online Registration tool, simply log into your ParentVue account and update your information on your own time and in the comfort of your own home.

We require that parents and guardians update information annually. This process is mandatory for all APS students and must be completed before the start of the 2018-2019 school yearIf this process is not completed, your student’s schedule will be held, and you will be asked to complete this process at the school before your student may begin the year.

Steps to complete Online Registration:

  1. Log into ParentVue. If you do not have a ParentVue account, please click the following link to create one. If you are having trouble, please consult the Parent/Student Account Creation Manual at the top of the webpage. ---->>>>https://mystudent.aps.edu/
  2. Click on “Messages” in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Begin Online Registration for the 2018-2019 school year and move through each section. The sections will not allow you to continue through if you have not approved each piece of information.
  4. For Documents: If you have already provided hard copies of your residency (a 2018 PNM or gas bill) and 7th grade immunizations to the school, you do not need to re-upload those documents. Birth certificates are only required for students who have not been previously enrolled in Albuquerque Public Schools. Note: If these documents are not provided either physically or electronically, your student’s schedule will be held, and you will be asked to provide these documents before your student may begin the school year.

For more information about Online Registration, please visit the APS Online Registration page.

Dear Parents,

Desert Ridge Middle School will be having an evacuation drill tomorrow (Wednesday, March 7th) at 8:30 am.  Our planned evacuation site is La Cueva High School.  For this drill, we will walk to the front of the school and teachers will take attendance and begin to walk back immediately.  We will then be on an abbreviated schedule which will allow students to meet with all of their teachers.

Our school will be locked and we will be unable to release students to you or check in students during this drill.  We hope to complete the drill by 9:15.

We hope that we do not have an event which requires us to evacuate but we want to have students and staff as prepared as possible.

Sincerely,
Dr. Kathy Alexander
Principal

Dear Costa Rica Parents and Travelers,

I just wanted to remind you that we will have our final Costa Rica meeting on Wednesday, February 28 at 7pm in the DRMS library. At this meeting, we will discuss our final itinerary, what and how to pack, student/teacher groups, hotels, and other essential information. I will also have some important materials to hand out to the students at that time. Because this meeting will cover crucial trip information, it is mandatory that at least one family member of each traveler attend.

If you are interested in our 2019 Costa Rica trip, this meeting is for you too! Come see all that we will do in Costa Rica and have your questions answered as we prepare for this exciting experience!

Take care, and I look forward to seeing you next Wednesday evening!

As a parent and or staff member at Desert Ridge Middle School you are automatically a member of the Student, Parent, Staff Organization (SPSO) and we would love for you to be involved.   Meetings are the second Thursday of each month at 8:20 in the library.  In case you did not know, the SPSO does not get funds from the DRMS Direct Donation and needs your assistance with a Member Contribution of a minimum of $10 for DRMS staff members.

This month we are doing a drawing for an airline ticket!  Please get your donation and name in for the drawing.  We have already given one ticket away and ready to do another one!

Return to reception desk by February 28th to be entered into the drawing.

The SPSO provides many opportunities such as the 8th grade dance, Web Leaders, Student Store, monthly Staff hospitality, the school newsletter, helping the counselors with emergency student needs, teacher supplies, as well as coordinating DRMS volunteers.  In recent years, we made larger purchases such as the mobile sound system and two large screens for the gym, blinds for the library and this fall we purchased outside lunch area table umbrellas.

If you have already made your SPSO membership donation we thank you!  We truly appreciate your contribution to making our school all it can be.  Donations can be returned to the school office.

Sincerely,

Desert Ridge Middle School SPSO Board

We are a qualified 501(c)(3) organization, so your donation is tax deductible

Dear Parents,

Cold and Flu season has arrived.  The Health Office has had reports of Influenza, strep throat and gastrointestinal illnesses. If your student has been diagnosed with a contagious disease, please notify the Health Office at 857-9282 Ext. 33813.  The School Nurse uses this information to track and trend disease especially with immunocompromised and medically challenged students in school.

If your child becomes ill and doesn’t feel well enough to take part in school, as parents or guardians, you should keep your child home until the symptoms improve.  This helps prevent the spread of the illness to others at school.  These are some of the examples of when your child should be kept home:

  • Fever* with headache, body aches, earache, sore throat
  • Active vomiting
  • Active diarrhea – three or more times in six hours
  • An airway infection – Cold, Persistent Cough, Runny Nose
  • If antibiotic treatment is needed, your child should remain home for the first full 24 hours of medication (e.g., if your child has three doses per day ordered, then three doses must be given before the child returns to school.
  • Any of the above symptoms with fever or chills

If any symptoms change, worsen or don’t get better please call your health care provider.

*Your child can return to school when he or she is well enough to take part in school and has had no fever for 24 hours without medication (acetaminophen, Tylenol®, etc.).

All students who become ill/injured at school must report first to the Health Office before leaving school. Students will be allowed to contact parents from the Health Office.

If you have any questions please contact the Desert Ridge Health Office or refer to the APS Sick Day Guidelines.

Thank you for helping keep our community healthy!

IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION

All current 6th grade students need to have a Tdap injection prior to starting 7th grade.  Please check your child's shot record for documentation that this injection was done and provide us with a current copy.

If your child still needs to be vaccinated and you wish to avoid an extra line during registration in August, please have the injection done and the record turned in to the health office no later than 4/30/18.  This will allow time to update the charts before closing for the summer break.

If you choose to have the injection during the summer break you will need to bring documentation with you on the registration day in August.  Please do not drop off any records during the summer break.

If you have any questions please call Cyndi Brault, Health Assistant at 857-9282 Ext. #33813.

Good afternoon everyone! Your busy parent elves have been getting sign-up genius's ready for our annual Holiday-in-a-Box event.

For those of you who are new to DRMS, our Social Studies classes participate in the Holiday-in-a-Box event.  There are 22 DRMS families we are helping this year!

In hopes to avoid duplicate gifts and meeting all the needs of our "adopted" families, we have put together a sign-up sheet for each family.  Simply find your child’s Social Studies teacher from the list below, click the link, and then check the box of the item(s) you would like to donate.  Once someone signs up for the item, it is no longer available.  Also, your name will not appear on the donation list.

Please wrap all the personal items and LABEL WHO EACH PACKAGE IS FOR (eg: girl, age 13, family #12, etc.). If possible, include a gift receipt for clothing items that are purchased.  Please bring your items to the school no later than Tuesday, December 12th. SPSO will pick-up the gifts during your lunches on Wednesday, December 13th so we do not interrupt class time.  This will also allow extra time for students who need to drop off the morning of the 13th.

If you have any questions, please contact Margaret Matteucci in the counseling office.  Thank you and your student for participating in this wonderful school event.

Albuquerque Teacher Named Finalist for the 2017 National History Teacher of the Year Award

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (September 6, 2017): Randy Martin, the 2017 New Mexico History Teacher of the Year, has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2017 National History Teacher of the Year Award. The award is presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education.

"Knowledgeable and impassioned teachers bring our country's history to life for students, allowing them to understand engaging with history is about more than a series of facts,” said James G. Basker, President of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. “Teachers are the lifeblood of our students’ education, and these are the best of the best.”

Inaugurated in 2004, the History Teacher of the Year Award highlights the crucial importance of history education by honoring exceptional American history teachers from elementary school through high school. The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools and US Territories. This is the first time the committee has selected a group of finalists from the state honorees. The National History Teacher of the Year will be selected from the pool of 10 finalists in October 2017.

Martin, a teacher at Desert Ridge Middle School in Albuquerque, creates an environment where his students interact hands-on with history. “In a world of ‘fake news’ and ‘alternative facts,'” said Martin, “enabling students to be able to understand how to distinguish reality from false information using primary sources has become the most critical skill that should be taught in the social studies classroom.”

The winner of the National History Teacher of the Year award receives a $10,000 prize, presented by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Eric Foner at a ceremony in New York City on November 8, 2017. Past presenters at the ceremony include the Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Good Morning America's Robin Roberts, First Lady Laura Bush, former US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Nominations for the 2018 History Teacher of the Year awards are now open. Students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors may nominate K-12 teachers for the award by visiting gilderlehrman.org/nhtoy. The deadline for 2018 nominations is March 30, 2018.

About the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

Founded in 1994 by philanthropists Richard Gilder and Lewis E. Lehrman, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is the leading American history nonprofit organization dedicated to K-12 education. With a focus on primary sources, the Gilder Lehrman Institute illuminates the stories, people and moments that inspire students of all ages and backgrounds to learn and understand more about history. Through a diverse portfolio of education programs, including the acclaimed Hamilton Education Program, the Gilder Lehrman Institute provides opportunities for nearly two million students, 30,000 teachers and 13,000 schools worldwide.
